My otp routinely has conversations about their love relationship inside of their routine conversations regarding the possibility actuality of loved ones murdering them all!

I adore this scene so much for so many reasons, in fact the whole episode is pretty amazing for these two. 

Firstly, the fact that this scene was straight after a 1492 flashback where Klaus accused Elijah of caring for Katerina, was kind of a mirror to the current situation. It’s as if Elijah was asking himself if he cared for Elena as well at that moment, even if it was just a minuscule amount. And shortly after that, he looked down almost like he was embarrassed to face the truth of his admiration for the girl. He looked down because it hit him that history was going to repeat itself and also afraid of not letting go this time. Because finally he found something pure and someone that made humanity beautiful again despite all the tragedies that happened in the past. 

Then when Elena popped out that question that was lingering carelessly in his own mind, he brought himself to deny because it was his weakness. Being drawn to humans and their hope to at least bring even a small amount of happiness to him. And even if he denied it, anyone but Elena couldn’t see the genuine passion in his eyes and how he was struggling to be firm and controlled in front of her. You kind of feel sorry for him because all his life he’s been taught and told not to care and give a damn when he wanted to as he misses it too much. 

And it takes a lot to care for someone who carries the face of someone else (Katherine) who he practically despised then for running away and releasing that part of her that human. But then there’s Elena. Same face, different soul. And he treasures that.
